Meta Finally Brings a WhatsApp Mac App with Video Calling for Up to 8 People—E2E Also Available

-

The Mac version of the WhatsApp computer app is finally here from Meta, and this is after a long while of the company holding out for the Apple computer, with the company offering a new feature exclusively for PCs. This is with the WhatsApp video calling feature where it would allow up to 8 people to join a single call, but is not limited to that for audio participants.

According to a blog post by the WhatsApp team, the dedicated app for Apple’s Mac that adheres to its macOS is now available for the world to download and experience instant messaging on their computers.

Users may download it directly from the WhatsApp website, but its Apple App Store availability is not yet available, and users would have to wait for it should they want to avoid the installation procedures.

The manual download and installation are fairly easy and come as a standard for Mac apps in the DMG format. After downloading from the website link above, double-click the downloaded file to open the drive.

Next, users only need to drag the WhatsApp app to the Applications folder of the Mac computer, where they can access it directly from here or keep it on the dock.

WhatsApp for Mac requires macOS 11 or later for compatibility.

WhatsApp Mac: Video Calling

Meta claimed that the latest feature it added for WhatsApp for Mac is its video calling feature that would allow up to 8 people to join a single call.

However, it is not limited to that, as the same call would allow users to add as many as 32 participants who are on audio only, with the single room allowing as many as 40 participants in a call.

Meta and WhatsApp

WhatsApp has been a staple app for the world, centering on instant messaging and other social media features as shared by Meta to its subsidiary app, mimicking that of Messenger, Telegram, and more.

However, the most notorious issue with WhatsApp before was its chat and data transferring to a new device, with the app now allowing users to do this without the complicated steps or third-party apps.

Since it is mostly used for business or work, with some for personal needs, WhatsApp has been the center of many breaches and privacy issues from threat actors, as well as Meta. There have been several features available on WhatsApp to protect one’s data and information, but it has a catch-one that would require users to access their old phones to do so.

With WhatsApp seeing significant difficulties before in switching devices, the computer apps were not a priority for the company before, but since it has been fixed, the initial rollout arrived for Windows. Now, Meta is following up with its earlier this year’s release with a dedicated Mac app, one that aims to line up against the likes of Zoom and Teams with its exclusive video calling feature.
