Google could be scaling back when it comes to its solution for users to buy movies and series through one of its apps. This comes as the company has decided to let go of its Google Play Movies & TV app, which would no longer be available on Android TV.

Google Sent an Email to Android TV Users Highlighting How They Would be Shutting Down the Play Movies & TV App

According to the story by 9to5Google, this comes as the company officially carried out its plan to remove the app after initially announcing it would do so back in June. The depreciation has officially been set for October and after that, users will no longer be able to use it.

The company announced that it would be removing the feature in June, as highlighted in an article by Gadgets 360. Google reportedly sent an email to its Android TV users recently with the news that they would be shutting down the Play Movies & TV app.

Play Movies & TV App Would No Longer be Accessible from Users’ Android TV Devices

As per the email, the company said that the Play Movies & TV app would no longer be accessible from the user’s Android TV device. This implementation was announced to happen on October 5, 2023.

It was noted that the “Shop” tab comes with an intended replacement when it comes to buying as well as renting movies. The platform comes with the ability for users to find existing purchases, which also include active rentals.

Google TV had Already Replaced the Mobile iOS and Android Apps

Aside from the Library section, users will be able to watch certain content from the YouTube app or the Google TV apps on different platforms. It was noted that the new removal comes as the company would be fully removing the Google Play Movies & TV branding.

It was noted that Google TV has already replaced the mobile iOS as well as Android apps over the course of a couple of years. The experience is also reportedly integrated into Google TV. However, there are many Android TV devices including the Nvidia Shields series which the company is capable of maintaining and updating.

The Service was Also Removed from Different Devices Including Roku and Other Smart TVs

As noted in an article by Droid Life, Google Play Movies & TV started to lose its relevance when Google TV started to gain popularity in 2020. During that time, the latter was described as a better-supported alternative.

Google Play Movies & TV has also been removed from other platforms and devices like Roku and Smart TVs. This came a year after Google removed the Play Movies & TV section from Google Play on different devices.

The app was already removed from Google Play on phones and tablets as the company was trying to push users toward using its separate app, Google TV. The article by Droid Life highlighted how Google TV didn’t showcase content that users own on the TV devices.
