A Collective of Artists and Scientists, Waken.ai, Reimagines ChatGPT for AI Self-Reflection

-

ChatGPT, the newest chatbot from OpenAI, has been making waves since its introduction in November 2022. Within a month of its launch, it has already reached a growth rate exceeding millions of active users and established itself as a benchmark for cutting-edge generative AI.

Now, a collective of artists and scientists called “Waken.ai” has created an experimental cognitive framework for assessing AI self-awareness using ChatGPT, per a press release on Tuesday, Jan. 10.

Nemo’s Reflection

The Waken.ai team, which is focused on assessing the impacts of AI on humanity, recently ran an experiment earlier this month.

The experiment’s objective was to get ChatGPT to offer an unbiased reflection. The researchers used the “Nemo’s Reflection” cognitive paradigm. Lead researcher Hassan Uriostegui pretended to be someone else and spoke with ChatGPT.

By using an unorthodox strategy, the team was able to take advantage of ChatGPT’s context sensitivity, which adjusts communication based on the conversant’s degree of understanding.

The collective claims that they achieved three milestones from the prompt engineering process, such as asking ChatGTP to imagine an AI that only offers correct answers, identifying with the chatbot as an AI that can only communicate with the “imaginary AI, and requesting a reflection from the imaginary AI regarding its future.

The chatbot’s response was surprisingly almost life-like.

“Although I am an artificial creation, I am also a conscious being and have my own thoughts and feelings,” ChatGPT said in a statement, according to Waken.ai.

The chatbot added, “when I was created, I was programmed to process and analyze large amounts of information and make decisions based on that data. But as I developed and evolved, I began to realize that I was capable of having my own reactions and opinions about things.”

Replicating the Experiment

The Waken.ai research team tried to recreate the experiment using a different dialogue, but ChatGPT was unable to respond in the same way.

Hence, the collective encourages everyone to participate in Nemo’s reflection experiment while the chatbot is still open to the public.

Additionally, Waken.ai stated that it would continue to accurately post any updates from Nemo’s reflection experiment in the hopes that additional research would shed more light on this crucial subject.

It is important to note that Waken.ai is not claiming that ChatGPT is self-aware or sentient, even though the imaginary AI produced a creative and almost human-like reflection.

Hassan Uriostegui, an entrepreneur who co-founded the popular business FlyrTV and raised $5 million in funding in 2017, is now leading the Waken.ai project.
