The Amazon-produced TV adaption of the popular, long-running video game series Fallout will premiere on Amazon Prime Video on April 12, 2024, the company announced on Monday.

Amazon also announced that the series will be part of the same canon as the video games. The announcement was made through social media posts that showed an interface resembling the iconic Vault Boy accessory from the games.

The series was announced in July 2020, alongside news that Westworld writers Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy would be executive producers. In January 2022, it was revealed that Nolan would direct the first episode but that two other writers—Geneva Robertson-Dworet (Captain Marvel, Tomb Raider) and Graham Wagner (Portlandia, The Office, Silicon Valley) would be the showrunners.

Amazon recently showed a trailer behind closed doors that revealed the series would take place in Southern California and that it would adhere tightly to the games’ visual and narrative style. Not much is known about the story or characters, though.

We know that Walton Goggins (Justified, Django Unchained, Predators, The Righteous Gemstones) will star and that the series will begin in a vault just like most of the games—Vault 33, to be specific. Kyle MacLachlan (Twin Peaks) and Ella Purnell (Yellowjackets) will also appear in the series.

For those unfamiliar: Fallout is a video game series that has been running since the late 1990s, first on PC and then on consoles. It’s set in a satirical, 1950s-style future post-nuclear apocalypse. The early games in the franchise were traditional top-down CRPGs, but later entries by Bethesda Game Studios were open-world action role-playing games akin to The Elder Scrolls.
