(BPRW) A Century of Black History Commemoration
(Tech Zone Daily) Black History Month is a time to honor the strength, struggles, resilience, lives and achievements of African Americans. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the first celebration of Negro History Week, established by Carter G. Woodson in 1926, which laid the foundation for what is now Black History Month.
Over the last century, Black history has been preserved, expanded, and propelled by scholars, activists, artists, and everyday community members who refused to allow truth to be erased. Their efforts have shaped how the past is remembered, how the present is understood and how the future is imagined.
Scholarship alone did not sustain this legacy. Activists transformed historical knowledge into action, linking it to struggles for liberation through civil rights, Black Power, anti-apartheid movements, labor organizing, and ongoing fights for racial justice. Equally important were communities that served as living archives. Through oral traditions, music, family stories and everyday spaces such as churches, kitchens, barbershops, and front porches, elders passed down history to prepare future generations for a world shaped by it.
As we mark this centennial milestone, Black History Month reminds us that history is not only something we remember, but something we carry forward, through our stories, our communities and our shared responsibility to honor the legacy left behind. Happy Black History Month!
