The Pentagon’s analysis and improvement arm on Monday awarded a trio of firms with contracts to construct and exhibit a nuclear-based propulsion system on a spacecraft in orbit by 2025.
General Atomics, Lockheed Martin and Jeff Bezos’ house enterprise Blue Origin received the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency or DARPA awards, beneath the company’s Demonstration Rocket for Agile Cislunar Operations program or DRACO.
The aim of this system is deceptively easy: Use a nuclear thermal propulsion system to energy a spacecraft past low Earth orbit.
The Pentagon’s analysis and improvement company says a nuclear powered spacecraft has the potential to obtain each the excessive energy of an chemical-based propulsion system and the excessive effectivity of an electrical-powered system.
