Elon Musk’s X Rolls Out ‘Community Notes’ Feature for Video Moderation

-

Elon Musk’s social platform X, formerly known as Twitter, has recently expanded its Community Notes program to include videos, TechCrunch tells us in a report.

This comes as an effort to combat the rampant spread of disinformation through edited video clips and AI-generated content. The move comes nearly ten months after the tool’s initial launch for images.

The Power of Community Notes

Community Notes, an open-source tool, empowers users to flag misinformation and provide essential context to readers. It allows eligible contributors to attach notes to videos, highlighting the content’s authenticity and accuracy.

One of the standout features of Community Notes is the automatic propagation of these notes across all posts containing matching videos.

The company tells us in a recent post that this ingenious approach offers a highly scalable solution to misinformation in video content, encompassing edited clips and AI-generated videos.

How It Works

For eligible contributors, adding notes to videos is a straightforward process.

By selecting the option “About the video in this post, and should appear on all posts including this video,” users can contribute valuable context to video clips, making them more informative and less susceptible to misuse.

In May, X (Twitter at the time) announced that the tool would also apply to images. If a user flags an image post as misleading or false and adds a note, that note will automatically extend to other matching images on the platform, bolstering the fight against misinformation.

A Global Initiative

Community Notes have been available worldwide since the previous year, reflecting X’s commitment to fostering a safer and more transparent online environment.

Over time, the platform has increased support for contributors from various countries, ensuring diverse perspectives and insights.

Recognizing the global user base, X has introduced helpful note accounts in multiple languages, including Dutch, French, German, and Italian.

These note accounts highlight the most significant contributions to posts, emphasizing the importance of community-driven moderation.

Tracking Impact

To measure the effectiveness of Community Notes, X recently introduced a counter that displays how many times an image with notes has appeared on the platform.

This feature not only serves as a testament to the community’s vigilance but also provides users with a tangible way to see the impact of their contributions.

Challenges and Concerns

While Community Notes represent a commendable effort to combat misinformation, they are not without their challenges.

Recent reports, such as Gizmodo‘s findings, have highlighted instances where notes were either inaccurate or failed to address issues effectively.

For instance, a link meant to debunk a rumor instead redirected users to a pornographic video. At the time of writing, X had not taken any action on this misleading link.
