Most solar-panel arrays are positioned on the bottom or on rooftops. But some researchers have explored choices, resembling placing floating panels on reservoirs, that intention to scale back water loss.
Brandi McKuin on the University of California, Merced, Elliott Campbell on the University of California, Santa Cruz, and their colleagues analysed the financial and monetary results of inserting photo voltaic panels over California’s 6,350 kilometres of canals. These channels transport water from mountains and reservoirs to farm fields and communities downstream.
Covering the canals with photo voltaic panels would forestall evaporation of roughly 40,000 cubic metres of water — 16 Olympic swimming swimming pools’ value — from every kilometre of canal yearly. The panels would additionally carry out higher than on land, due to the cooler microclimate over the water.
The advantages outweigh the prices of getting to construct the panels over the canals, the group concludes.
