Twitter Circle is Broken, Showing Tweets to Random People—New Privacy Issue?

A new issue with Twitter recently arose, as users report that the close friends feature of the platform, Twitter Circle, is broken and shows tweets to random people who are not part of the list. And while this problem is not exactly widespread in the social media as of now, it could be a significant privacy issue as one’s secret may be divulged to their regular followers or the public.

Twitter 2.0 is not exactly a perfect experience for the promises made by the social media, with Elon Musk and the company facing massive backlash for all the major changes with problems.

The famed YouTuber and former Twitch streamer, Theo Browne, has shared online that Twitter Circle is not exactly keeping the tweets to one’s list of mutuals in the exclusive or close friends feature of the platform. In a test tweet which he tweeted under the Circle feature, there was a user who was able to like it without being part of the exclusive list.

Browne said that the current issue with Twitter Circle “hurts trust in the platform,” and proceeds to tag Twitter’s Engineering account to address the issue.

It has been a year since Twitter launched the Circle feature to keep a separate list of chosen users to see secret tweets of an account, and here, the public divulged secrets or sentiments they would not normally share to their entire following.

New Privacy Issue with Twitter Circle Feature?

According to 9to5 Mac, other users who wished to remain anonymous also claimed that they are seeing this issue on their Twitter Circle, with their secrets unknowingly divulged to the public.

Since there are already many who are seeing this, it may be a privacy issue in which sensitive information may also be available to other users without their consent.

Twitter is yet to comment on and address this said issue.

    Twitter 2.0’s Current Issues

One of the most significant issues with the platform now is the infamous source code leak on GitHub, where a suspected former employee or insider relayed Twitter’s operational codes to the public. The company and Chief Tweet are now seeking out the person behind this with a court-issued subpoena, with GitHub now demanded to reveal the identity of the leaker to the social media.

Moreover, there have been significant issues known to surface from the company including the recent report which centers on a “VIP Boost” on the platform where a list of executives, politicians, and personalities are getting prioritized on the feed.

As Musk is pushing for more subscriptions to Twitter Blue to get a verification badge, and the For You page will mostly display verified people, the platform is not entirely a hit to users. Now, the Twitter Circle feature is seeing several issues as reported by users on the platform, and it may be a new privacy issue where secrets are not safe and divulged to the public.
